Inconsistency of Timeliness in a Chief Complaint-Based Syndromic Surveillance System During Two Influenza Epidemic Seasons

چکیده
Introduction Syndromic surveillance system has been developed and implemented all over the world, and many studies showed that syndromic data sources had improved timeliness towards traditional surveillance method in the early warning of some infectious disease epidemics. However, owing to the uncertainties of disease epidemic features, clinical manifestations and population behaviors, the early warning timeliness of syndromic data sources might change across time and population, and few studies had explored their consistency in different epidemic periods of infectious diseases.

Automated Syndromic Classifi cation of Chief Complaint Records
yndromic surveillance, a medical surveillance approach that bins data into broadly defi ned syndrome groups, has drawn increasing interest in recent years for the early detection of disease outbreaks for both public health and bioterrorism defense. Emergency department chief complaint records are an attractive data source for syndromic surveillance owing to their timeliness and ready availabili...

Syndromic data sources have been sought to improve the timely detection of increased influenza transmission. This study set out to examine the prospective performance of telenursing chief complaints in predicting influenza activity. Data from two influenza seasons (2007/08 and 2008/09) were collected in a Swedish county (population 427,000) to retrospectively determine which grouping of telenur...
متن کاملTimeliness of syndromic influenza surveillance through work and school absenteeism
In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of work and school absenteeism surveillance as an early warning system for influenza. In particular, time trends in daily absenteeism rates collected during the A(H1N1)2009 pandemic are compared with weekly incidence rates of influenza-like illness (ILI) obtained from the Belgian Sentinel General Practitioner (SGP) network. The results indicate a ris...

Early detection is fundamental for achieving effective control of infectious disease outbreaks. We described the development of a local chief complaint emergency department (ED)-based syndromic surveillance system to improve public health response in Genoa, Italy. The five syndromes under investigation by the syndromic surveillance system were influenza-like illness (ILI), low-respiratory tract...
متن کاملSyndromic Surveillance for Influenza in the Emergency Department–A Systematic Review
The science of surveillance is rapidly evolving due to changes in public health information and preparedness as national security issues, new information technologies and health reform. As the Emergency Department has become a much more utilized venue for acute care, it has also become a more attractive data source for disease surveillance. In recent years, influenza surveillance from the Emerg...
